4 Anthologies to Submit Short Stories to
Some submission calls writers should keep an eye on
--
There are many presses out there publishing anthologies — collections of short stories from different authors. But most are only open for a few weeks or months at a time, and it can be difficult keeping track of which ones writers can currently submit to.
With that in mind, I’ve rounded up anthologies from four presses that are open for submissions right now! Good luck and godspeed, fellow writers.
Brigids Gate Press — Gothic Romance
Brigids Gate are looking for gothic romances that are equal parts horror and romance — containing both a creeping sense of dread and a happily ever after (or happy for now) ending. A strong sense of place is necessary, and they want stories from women or non-binary individuals.
Submissions should be sent here, and the full submissions guidelines can be found here.
Word count: 2,000–6,000 words.
Payment: $0.08 per word.
Quill and Crow Publishing House — Horror
This is actually six anthology calls in one, because Quill and Crow have a big lineup for 2023 and 2024! In order, they are looking for stories of winter horror, mythology blended with gothic/literary vibes, Shakespeare retellings, creatures from legends and folktales, and stories of marauders and the sea.
You can find the full list, as well as the specifics for each anthology submission call, here!
Word count: 5,000–8,000 words.
Payment: $40–45, depending on location, and author copy.
Flame Tree Press — Immigrant Sci-Fi
Flame Tree Press are looking for stories that “explore the world from the gaze of the incoming,” and want sci-fi submissions from a diverse range of writers who have “direct or familial experience of immigration and migration and its complex issues.”
Word count: roughly 2,000–4,000 words.
Payment: $0.08 per word.
Lost Boys Press — Humanised Creatures
I would be completely remiss if I failed to mention the press I volunteer at, which opened for submissions just a few days ago for our latest anthology, Empire of Beasts. We’re looking for short stories about non-humans with human characteristics — think stories about societies of sentient dragons, and what their culture, religion, houses etc would look like.
The full submissions details can be found here!
Word count: 3,000–9,000 words.
Payment: $40 and author copy.
